This seems like the time to start. </p><p>Our recently retired Ruston fire chief died last night. He was diagnosed with lung cancer just last month. The multitude who were touched by and loved Don Torbet, we are all in shock and heartbroken. I don't have words right now. Or enough pictures of these precious faces that have been a constant, deep part of the fabric of my life for over 30 years. Don was snatched away too soon. None of us were ready to let him go, not even close. Words will come later. For now only tears. <b>Ruston, we lost a giant of a man last night.</b></p><div style="font-family: inherit;"><div class="l9j0dhe7" style="font-family: inherit; position: relative;"><div class="l9j0dhe7" style="font-family: inherit; position: relative;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yWvwLNDCtqk/X_QFuLicn3I/AAAAAAAAOHw/qk9nkR0eoAQGdhWcCwQFBEUaKAlFrleKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1481/Don%2Band%2BBeth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1141" data-original-width="1481" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yWvwLNDCtqk/X_QFuLicn3I/AAAAAAAAOHw/qk9nkR0eoAQGdhWcCwQFBEUaKAlFrleKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Don%2Band%2BBeth.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></div></div></div></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><div class="stjgntxs ni8dbmo4 l82x9zwi uo3d90p7 h905i5nu monazrh9" data-visualcompletion="ignore-dynamic" style="border-radius: 0px 0px 8px 8px; font-family: inherit; overflow: hidden;"><div style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: "segoe ui historic", "segoe ui", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><div class="a8nywdso e5nlhep0 rz4wbd8a ecm0bbzt dhix69tm oygrvhab wkznzc2l kvgmc6g5 k7cz35w2 jq4qci2q j83agx80" style="display: flex; font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.9375rem; height: 32px; margin: 0px 16px; padding: 4px 0px;"><div aria-label="Send this to friends or post it on your timeline." class="oajrlxb2 bp9cbjyn g5ia77u1 mtkw9kbi tlpljxtp qensuy8j ppp5ayq2 goun2846 ccm00jje s44p3ltw mk2mc5f4 rt8b4zig n8ej3o3l agehan2d sk4xxmp2 rq0escxv nhd2j8a9 j83agx80 rj1gh0hx btwxx1t3 pfnyh3mw p7hjln8o kvgmc6g5 cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x tgvbjcpo hpfvmrgz jb3vyjys rz4wbd8a qt6c0cv9 a8nywdso l9j0dhe7 i1ao9s8h esuyzwwr f1sip0of du4w35lb lzcic4wl abiwlrkh p8dawk7l buofh1pr k7cz35w2 taijpn5t ms05siws flx89l3n ogy3fsii" role="button" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; align-items: center; background-color: transparent; border-bottom-color: var(--always-dark-overlay); border-left-color: var(--always-dark-overlay); border-right-color: var(--always-dark-overlay); border-style: solid; border-top-color: var(--always-dark-overlay); border-width: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; display: flex; flex-direction: row; flex: 1 0 0px; font-family: inherit; height: 32px; justify-content: center; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 0px; min-width: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-align: inherit; touch-action: manipulation; transition-duration: var(--fds-fast); transition-property: transform; transition-timing-function: var(--fds-strong); user-select: none; z-index: 0;" tabindex="0"><div class="n00je7tq arfg74bv qs9ysxi8 k77z8yql i09qtzwb n7fi1qx3 b5wmifdl hzruof5a pmk7jnqg j9ispegn kr520xx4 c5ndavph art1omkt ot9fgl3s" data-visualcompletion="ignore" style="border-radius: 4px; bottom: 0px; font-family: inherit; inset: 0px; left: 0px; opacity: 0; pointer-events: none; position: absolute; right: 0px; top: 0px; transition-duration: var(--fds-duration-extra-extra-short-out); transition-property: opacity; transition-timing-function: var(--fds-animation-fade-out);"></div></div></div></div><div class="cwj9ozl2 tvmbv18p" style="color: #1c1e21; font-family: "segoe ui historic", "segoe ui", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 4px;"><span class="pmk7jnqg g0aa4cga q45zohi1" data-html2canvas-ignore="true" style="clip-path: polygon(0px 0px, 0px 0px, 0px 0px, 0px 0px); clip: rect(0px, 0px, 0px, 0px); font-family: inherit; position: absolute;"></span></div></div></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303471548184281594.post-3347056831035152322016-03-24T07:28:00.000-07:002016-04-07T03:06:14.630-07:00Have Some Fun On Wheels This Weekend<br />

<br />
<i><span class="notranslate">A big THANK YOU to all of the kind neighbors
we met today in Ruston, and especially to Ray for saving the day!!! I
woke up this morning with the disheartening realization that even though
my kids and I had somewhere to be in just over an hour, I did not have a
car seat for my toddler. It had mistakenly been taken with our minivan
to the car shop in Spanaway where the van was getting fixed. The</span>
<span class="hide" id="body_extra_announce_20828397" style="display: inline;">
<span class="notranslate">kids and I took the double-stroller and
started walking around Ruston on a mission to find a friendly neighbor
who might have an extra car seat. We met many wonderful and kind people
who took the time to check their garages, to walk with us to meet more
neighbors, or to smile and offer advise. In the end, Ray saved the day
when he pulled his recycling truck up to our house with a loaner car
seat from the new daycare center, Stepping Stones Academy, who had one
to spare! Thank you, Tierra, for offering that to us! I feel so blessed
to be living in a small town (with the conveniences of a big city,
nonetheless!) surrounded by such kind neighbors. With a car seat loaner
secured, we made it to our scheduled activity (better late than never),
and were able to drive to the auto shop to retrieve our toddler's car
seat. Thank you all, again! Hopefully those of you who opened your front
doors to us are reading this -- thank you, all! It was a fun adventure,
and we look forward to seeing you all around town again.

Don and company have been offering reviews of local restaurants and attractions for years. <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PolUiiGyVis/VlNktBT9tII/AAAAAAAAAUg/6r7r-1lZ-r4/s1600/flags.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PolUiiGyVis/VlNktBT9tII/AAAAAAAAAUg/6r7r-1lZ-r4/s400/flags.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The new nautical flag poles at Point Ruston's Grand Plaza caused some questions when the flags were first raised. Although the American flag was placed in the proper location, it was not the highest flag in the set. On nautical flag poles, the position of highest honor is the flag at the front of the vessel, at the front of the vertical tee. The flag at the top of the pole is used to display the vessel's club flag; in Point Ruston's case the Seahawk 12th Man flag. The arrangement has been modified since the initial placement, with no flag on the top of the pole for now. It's an interesting lesson in protocol... <br />

The Ruston Chevron at 5043 N. Pearl Street is now a <a href="https://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/service/access-point-receiver.html" target="_blank">UPS Access Point</a>. You can drop off prepaid packages for shipment and order items to be sent to the store rather than having them left on your front porch. The UPS driver may redirect your package to the store if you are not home as well.<br />
<br />
Given the rash of thefts during recent holiday seasons, it's a welcome local option. The Access Point services are available from 6am until 6pm. Call the station manager Gary with more questions at (206) 856-3590.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303471548184281594.post-45129867913212469412015-11-19T18:38:00.000-08:002015-11-19T18:38:06.092-08:00Honor Our Past: Opinion My reaction to some of yesterday's Cinemark theater opening speeches.As always, I welcome your thoughts...<br />
<br />
The talk of the dirty, polluting, smelly, dangerous, evil that once
lived down the hill still bothers me after all these years. The superior
bragging that sets us up as so much smarter, so much more
sophisticated, so much more righteous than our fathers. How "we closed
down the smelter". How we have "transformed this blight". How it's a new
community with new people - implying they are better than the old.<br />
<br />
Yes,
it is a wonderful change. It is worth celebrating. But the bashing of
the old in order to build up the new isn't needed. It's an insult to the
men and women who built this town. To the hard laborers who toiled for a
century, making a better life for their children and our world. These
honest, decent people loved this town - and loved the smelter. They were
proud of the copper they produced. Every time we "new" people flip on a
light or start a car, we rely on the copper their contemporaries
provide for us.<br />
<br />
It's a different world now than it was when the smelter was born. We've conquered many childhood diseases.
We understand the environment better. Perhaps our founding father's
should have known there would be a city surrounding the smelter someday. Perhaps they should have
understood the impacts of using a taller stack to disperse emissions. But they
didn't. I don't believe that makes them or their work a blight.<br />
<br />
I'm
not saying one is all bad or or the other all good. It's more complex
than that. But I wish we could look beyond our egos and somehow
celebrate this glorious new season without degrading the people or
industry that made this season possible. I wish we could embrace the
future while honoring the past. It will be a different world a hundred
years from now. Let's hope our children's children see value in what we
leave them and honor the history we make for them.Ruston Homehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04399042300015709587noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303471548184281594.post-45586475620117093702015-11-18T18:35:00.000-08:002015-11-18T18:49:23.442-08:00It's Open - Come On Down!<a href="http://cinemark.com/" target="_blank">The Cinemark movie theater </a>officially opens to the public tomorrow. A "ribbon cutting" ceremony was held today with local dignitaries, but instead of cutting a ribbon, they tore a movie ticket. Restaurants from the <a href="http://www.pointruston.com/" target="_blank">Point Ruston development </a>provided samples of their food and grand speeches were given. The fountain at the Grand Plaza is now open as well, with a spectacular light display after dark. The stairs will remain closed until a handicap ramp can be completed, but the plaza is open from the top with plenty of parking. Head on down and enjoy.<br />
