Nautical Flag Etiquette


The new nautical flag poles at Point Ruston's Grand Plaza caused some questions when the flags were first raised. Although the American flag was placed in the proper location, it was not the highest flag in the set. On nautical flag poles, the position of highest honor is the flag at the front of the vessel, at the front of the vertical tee. The flag at the top of the pole is used to display the vessel's club flag; in Point Ruston's case the Seahawk 12th Man flag. The arrangement has been modified since the initial placement, with no flag on the top of the pole for now. It's an interesting lesson in protocol...
