2008 Ruston Priorities

As the year starts to wind down, and we've somehow survived another nasty campaign season in Ruston, it's time to think about next year. I'd love to hear what things are important to you as residents in town. And I also hope for input from others out there in the South Sound. Ruston has been a source of entertainment for many ~ what constructive input do the rest of you have?

I'll get the conversation started with my wish list:

1) Keep Ruston strong and viable!
a. Follow the recommendations of the Fire Committee and support/grow our existing volunteer fire department. They provide better, more cost-effective service than other options explored by the committee ~ and add important value to Ruston’s identity and sense of community.
2) Keep Ruston strong and viable!
a. Build a solid tax base by supporting our local businesses.
3) Keep Ruston strong and viable!
a. Support our existing employees; pay them what they deserve rather than reducing their hours and benefits (as the new council is poised to do for 2008).
4) Keep Ruston strong and viable!
a. Wise spending of 2008 Town budget dollars; don’t waste any more money chasing the vendetta against the Commencement condo development.
5) Keep Ruston strong and viable!
a. Have the mayor and council value the varied opinions of our citizens rather than attack or ignore those they disagree with.

The #1 priority should be to plan and budget for the orderly implementation of the recommendations of the Fire Dept Study Committee. The time line shown by the Fire Chief in his report (which shows the response time for Ruston compared to response time for Tacoma) proves the importance of the timely response we have now, as those of us who have experienced that quick response in an emergency have been trying to tell others here in town.

#2. Planning and budgeting for the Police Dept., again, in preparation for increased population, which is coming.

#3 planning & Budgeting for improvements necessary in our sewage and and storm drainage systems.

All of these items listed above have had studies and more studies and recommendations made. It is time to implement those recommendations.
