Tunnel Closed Three More Weeks

Although the tunnel will be open next week for Thanksgiving, Point Ruston announced today that the road and tunnel will be closed for three more weeks beginning November 30th. Progress is hard, especially for our local businesses dependent on this traffic. Stop in and make a purchase or two to help keep our guys afloat!

Why would they go through the trouble of opening the tunnel for a few days? Leave it closed and get the work done.Thats my vote.

Is local business seriously in the toilet because of the closure?

I wouldn't say "in the toilet" but some have certianly seen a significant decrease in their sales. They'll likely survive, but as neighbors we can stop in and make a purchase or two to help. It's a tough economy as it is, this isn't helping....

in this bad economy, shouldn't local businesses survive on their own merits? the tunnel closing is hard for them, but there's suffering all over the south sound. if a business doesn't make it these days, it's not unusual, it seems to me.

You can tell from comment #4 they do not or have not lived in Ruston very long. The atmosphere in Ruston for 100 years has been very neighborly vis a vis Southern California.
Such pettiness it so out of place in Ruston but truly you have to feel sorry for these people.

For the local retail businesses that count on commuters/tourists to stop by (ie all of them), cutting of the major source of traffic does have an impact. Its not a matter of "their merits". I think we should be concerned as neighbors, and the town should be concerned for the tax base. I don't think we should just sit back and let our local businesses suffer if there is something we can do to help. Not everyone will agree, but I made the suggestion for those that are willing to do a little extra right now.

'Merits' includes ingenuity in marketing the businesses. In this economy businesses have to step out and take risks to hold their customer base firm. Consistent courtesy and a smile helps a lot, as well as being on top of what people want. Without those two practices a business will go nowhere in today's economy, tunnel or not. That's my thought, anyway.
