Last Day To Drive The Tunnel

As The News Tribune notes in their extensive article today, Tuesday is the last day we will be able to drive through the Ruston tunnel. I expect we'll hear honking horns most of the day - a great way to say goodbye to the old structure...

WOW! The time has finally come.It is the end of the old era. And the beginning of a new one. Good by old dark, dingy, wet and narrow tunnel. I will miss thee.

Shave and a hair cut...two bits!

Now that the tunnel is gone, there's simply no reason to go to Ruston.

as a person that used the tunnel getting to and from work I would like to know when we can expect the replacement road finished?

The new road is expected to be open by early 2011, so its a 6 to 8 month closure.

I am told this is a six month closure which would put us into January of 2012/weather permitting. If they can finish before that ~ awesome & congratulations! The new road will better accommodate bicycles and will have sidewalks for the rest of us ~ traffic will not have to struggle with an ancient tunnel.(though I personally will miss another passing quirk of my childhood). As one of 4 business owners on 51st Street, we ask for community support during this transition to carry us all through the long winter.

the 6 month time frame to open is to put in all new major utility lines including 2 very large sewer pipes on a flatbed headed down there Wednesday. A very big project lots of heavy equipment. Let's hope the good weather continues.
