It was a different world back in 1889. The Industrial Age was in its full glory, with the birth of cities and the frontier shrinking. Tacoma was still in its infancy in many ways, wanting to expand and become the largest city in the state. That effort is seen in the following Chamber of Commerce brochure touting the virtues of Tacoma, including this write up of the brand new smelter on the shores of Commencement Bay.
