The tunnel was closed for some time this morning because a very large truck tried to maneuver its way through the very tight turn on the Ruston end. It didn't make it and got stuck. Our volunteer fire department did it's volunteer thing and voluntarily manned the street barricade at 51st and Bennett. Our police department worked hard to clear up the mess.
This happens every couple of years. If it weren't so darn cold today, we would have probably had the usual crowd gather to watch the show in the credit union parking lot. It's great entertainment for us locals, but has to be embarrassing for the many truck drivers who try to defy nature and pull a big truck through a small tunnel.

Things like this aside- I will miss the tunnel after its gone!
Thanks for the report! Looking forward to pics later.
I'd love to read a commentary on what they have to do to un-stick the stuck trucks.
I'll miss the tunnel too. I wish they'd reconsider demolishing it. If the tunnel wasn't going away I'd say a jovial plaque on the Ruston mouth of the tunnel with un-sticking directions engraved for those who find themselves in such a predicament would be funny and useful.
They probably didn't even need the fire department & a tow truck. Just deflate the tires a bit and then drive right out.
I heard from who watched this unfold that the vehicle was able to drive out after some maneuvering. There was a language barrier with the driver, but once the tow truck showed up, I guess they got the truck backed up and drove it out the center of the tunnel. There was some damage to the side of the truck where it hit the side of the tunnel, but not near as spectacular as some of the accidents we’ve seen in that spot.
The tunnel does hold memories. Remember when Phil tried to get Asarco to save the stack? It was a feel good idea that didn't bring out hate, people smiled when they didn't agree and those who did signed petitions (I think??)
Extend the tunnel from Ferdinand Street to Schroders house.Put in a couple more turns and leave it dark. Ooh...that would be scary, yet refreshing!
