Mary Joyce Community Center

Since I am so far behind on reporting the discussion at the council meetings, some may not know that the new community center remodel is almost done. The previous gym at the Ruston School is being converted to public space once again. It was most recently used as the sales center for The Commencement condo project. The space was released back to the town several months ago. Although work stalled out for a time due to financial constraints, work recently started up again after the council authorized borrowing up to $5,000 to finish the work. The money will be repaid with rental fees generated from private party events at the center.

Mayor Hopkins reports that Planning Commission Chair Kevin Moser has led the mostly volunteer effort to open up an area for meetings, while remodeling the former sample condo unit unto a usable kitchen area for events. The Commencement donated much of their equipment, cabinets, counters and such for the town to use.

The mayor anticipates having the council meetings at the new community center starting in June. An open house is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 5th.

I stopped by the community center a couple days ago and it was bustling with workers.

I talked to a very nice young man who was doing the hardwoods. He had an accent (I think French) and was doing an AMAZING job. Who knew it could look so nice in there! He said "Expert Hardwood Floors" was his company name. I don't know if he lives in Ruston but we should definitely support the guys that help us out.

Also, thanks to Kevin for all of his hard work.
