Smelter Weeds And The Meaning of Life

Check out this great description today of long-time Ruston resident and business owner Bev Wombacher and her inspirational story - with a few mentions of horsetails (smelter weeds) thrown in by Candace Brown. Candace has her own blog called Good Life Northwest.

HORSETAILS, a prehistoric survivor. People equate them with pollution because they can grow almost anywhere. I have never dug one up to the root end but am told roots go 20 to 30 feet deep enabling them to reach water under almost any conditions. Interested to hear your observations?

I have heard similar stories, but have never dug that deep to confirm. I've heard of folks digging holes for sewer lines 10 feet down and finding roots, though.

I do know we can get some pretty big ones in the wet areas around here. We had a Horsetail Festival in 1992 where we gave a prize to the longest horsetail. I don't remember how long it was, but well over a foot!

many interesting things about the horsetails. There appears to be a gold lining in their clouded history.
