Mayor Everding Resigns (Again)

Newly appointed Ruston mayor Bob Everding resigned as mayor effective yesterday. A short email that had been received by some council members over the weekend was read at the meeting tonight. No reasons was given in the email, but Council Member Dan Albertson said he resigned because 3 council members were ramming things through that Everding felt were detrimental to the town (i.e. the Point Ruston/Stack Hill developments). Council Member Jane Hunt regretted that he resigned his position a week early.

The News Tribune has a short story on their political blog about Everding's resignation.

Here is what I observed during the rest of the council meeting tonight. ~ Karen

Stebener called the meeting to order at 7 pm. Police Chief Reese called roll (all council members present, mayor absent). Council Member Hedrick was appointed mayor pro-tem. Since the agenda did not have any business items, Council Member Huson moved to add a first reading for the ordinance that would endorse the planning commission and staff's findings and recommendation to approve the Point Ruston Master Plan. The addition of this item to the agenda passed 3-2, with Albertson and Stebner voting no.

The agenda was changed again to add discussion about the mayor and allow for a half hour executive session for the police chief to discuss a personnel issue and an on-going investigation and for potential litigation. These changes were approved 4-1 with Albertson voting no.

Staff Reports:
Fire Department: Chief Torbet noted 9 calls in July (only one fire work complaint call, no injuries or fires on July 4th), the new engine is in service and upgrades are in process for the radio system.

Police Department: Among other things, LESA's annual report was provided to the council along with Ruston's call statistics, the department got a grant for a shield to use during forced entries, BNSF Railroad has provided a letter allowing Ruston police to investigate some crimes on their property and the chief provided a suggested pay scale to bring the department's salaries up to comparable levels for this area (all full time Ruston officers have applications out with other agencies).

Business:
Point Ruston Master Plan: The town planner explained the process he and the planning commission had gone through to arrive at their findings. Hunt wanted clarification on the language the planning commission had added that no building would be allowed over 90 feet above sea level. The planner explained this was just another way of stating what was already outlined in the FEIS. Hunt also asked why Point Ruston was given 3 years to get their first building permit (see the commission's deliberations for the reasons) and wanted the sections where "additional language" would be laid out to be provided before they vote.

The town attorney said council members were free to talk to anyone they wanted about this issue before they vote. Hunt made a motion that this would be the first reading of this ordinance and the second reading would be held at the next regular meeting on September 2nd. Albertson felt the issue was being rushed and the council should have all their questions answered before they had their first reading. He noted that the council members who had the most experience with the issue still had questions tonight. Hunt attempted to find a time Albertson could attend a study session so all questions could be asked, but he was unavailable (vacation, etc). The planner noted he had additional language for the council tonight and could answer any questions before the next meeting. The motion to accept tonight's discussion as a first reading passed 3-2.

Mayor Issue: The email from Mayor Everding was read. The town attorney noted that someone could be appointed mayor pro-tem (and retain their council vote) while serving temporally as mayor. Hunt thought since we could be changing the form of government in tomorrow's vote, the town could hire a manager very quickly. After some discussion, Huson was appointed mayor pro-tem until September 5th by a 4-1 vote (Albertson voting no).

Claims and Payroll: Will be addressed at Sept. 2nd meeting

General Public Comment:

  • Bev Wombacher praised the planning commission's thorough deliberations.
  • I asked why Everding had resigned (Albertson said he was not happy with 3 council members who had chosen to ignore the town attorney's advice).
  • Jim Wingard also applauded the planning commission.
  • Mike Cohen used his 2 minutes to explain the heights on the Point Ruston development.
  • John Shroder complained that the Point Ruston buildings would be too tall.
  • Bill Walker said the information on Point Ruston was not understandable.
  • Connie Maglione wanted to thank the fire department for quick and professional help to her neighbor, wanted to support Point Ruston and as chair of the civil service commission ask to be allowed to hold a special meeting (that she felt had been blocked by Mayor Everding).
  • Edie Tallman felt it was past time to approve the Point Ruston plan and wanted the noise at the Unicorn Tavern addressed.

Mayor's Time: None

Council Time:

  • Stebner: None
  • Huson: None
  • Albertson: He still felt the Point Ruston plan was being rushed, and lamented loosing Mayor Everding.
  • Hunt: She also was sorry to see Everding had "resigned a week early". She noted that she knows the planning for Point Ruston better than most, but that she often asks questions even if she knows the answers as a way to get information on the record.

The meeting moved into executive session. After about 35 minutes, the meeting was reconvened and adorned at about 8:45 pm.

How does that old saw go? "When the going gets tough, the faux tough get going."

If elected he will not serve. If appointed... same poppycock, balderdash, clown music in the head, council teeters on, Occam waits..

That was a great pick. Will you still get along with him Albertson? This time shall we try doing it the right way?

Ah, Craig, haven't you read what Ms Karen Blogity-blog says, that we should practice civility and stress the issues, not the personality? I suggest that a little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down; Life's too short to feel so bitter about so much. Don't take everything, especially yourself, so seriously. When you post on a blog, if you will speak to the issue in a civil manner you will have people respect what you have to say.

I wait for the day albertson votes anything but no.

Looks like the pack is disinegrating one by one!

So is it time for me, the Great Dictator, to take over the reigns and turn Ruston into the town that it needs to be?

It seems that the leadership as of late is about as competant as a dead yak.

Reply to this and let me know...I'll be your leader for life.

I long for the day when someone steps to the plate with vision and maturity. There are many in this community that are ready to participate, invest and develope Ruston to the awesome little town it can be. Those are the kinds of issues and conversations that could be taking place in this anonymous closet.

Just who are these people and where and why have they been hiding when we need them to lead NOW? Noone would want to take the abuse and experience the deceit that drives the RC group in the name of community service. And who in their right mind would serve us as town administrator with the current RC-run council as their boss?

Look in the mirror...you could be part of the new revival. Someone needs to be strong and brave to break this stronghold the RC group has strapped us with.

Don't forget to vote :)

This is a wondeful opportunity that has been placed before us.
We keep the same form of government.Council/Mayor.Appoint Albertson or Stebner to Mayor.Move the development along.Save the Town.Within 2 years we will have forgotten all this in fighting. The same people against everything will be shopping and eating and entertaining their friends along the waterfront...and somehow taking credit for it.But who cares!
This will be our finest hour.

Depends on who "they appoint" to the mayors postition and vacant council seat. Get your applications ready if we really want change!

keep dreaming anonymous #12: Ruston is going to go bankrupt from all the lawsuits. As for the Mayor he bowed out gracefully while having to endure criticism from a bunch of town bumpkins with no life beside bickering. he was a great mayor and his wife as much as she may not be like does not deserve all the flack they receive. Move on from this and find something else to talk about besides dwelling on old news. I am happy that the Mayor is gone only because he has a life besides Ruston and now he can enjoy it and continue to hold his head high and soar like the eagles he and his wife are.

Gracefully?? Former Mayor/Councilmember Everding made his bed (he and his wife have been leaders in the RC cult for years now), he knew who he was getting into bed with, and at the first sign of struggle and infighting he gave up without a second thought about his responsibilities as a civil servant. Only an RC cult follower would think otherwise.

I love this town!! When are they doing the auditions for the show Survivor? I hear they are coming to Ruston. They want to break Ruston off the point and float it out in the Sound. Maybe the mayor wants the first to audition or I forgot he likes to jump ship when the going gets tuff. What a let down or is it?

I can not think of a bigger bully than Bob Everding. He has quit in anger just like last time.Bullies never last. Bob wanted to drag out the process for Stack Hill, and beat to death the Point Ruston project. He may be a great neighbor but not much of a leader or mayor.

LOL alert.

One thing from Mondays council session occurred during public comments. It was so outrageous as to leave all who heard it speechless. Yes it was lawyer Dan again in the best of all times sitting down comedy routines. It requires a separate blog for utter hypocrisy. This is priceless!!!!!!!

A public comment made an inquiry as to why Bob Everding resigned as his letter gave no reason?

Interrupting at sonic speed Dan intoned with a smirk "He (Bob Everding) was unhappy with the council railroading items through on the agenda".

Apparently Dan was referring to the passage of the Stack Hill plat passed on a 3-2 vote the prior meeting with Dan and his only pal left Wayne voting no.

Dan, it has been on the agenda for two and one half years! Yipes, no wonder lawyers love getting paid by the hour. Costs run up deliberately on the Stack Hill plat approached $400,000 dollars with the town adding on fifteen percent. If this was railroaded through God help us.

Maybe Dan a man of high morals, integrity, an officer of the court, symbol of law and justice will follow Bob into oblivion and do the right thing, RESIGN IMMEDIATELY!!! And please take your little whispering buddy with you?

I promise all a big party when this takes place.

Who is his "whispering buddy" and is that who he went to bed with, as pointed out from an earlier anonymous poster?

"Ruston Anonymous"

"Hi, my name is Bob, and I...live in Ruston."

"Hi, Bob."

I am of the opinion that the town is better off with Bob E no longer in the position of mayor. That is based on my prior observations that he was more inclined to abstain vote no or not show up at strategic times. His refusal to sign on to some of the recent council business and refusal to facilitate the Civil Service Commission puts him back in the position he held on council. That being speedbump, or drawback if you want a quasi-football analogy.

The title of this blog entry is "Mayor Everding Resigns (Again)" so now you have the rest of my opinion.

As to bitterness, I have little. My life is filled with purpose and love and I have steered no small number away from a negative path. I have also pulled more than a few back from death. I will always honor the memory of those that died for me but it is cold comfort. What bitterness I harbor is aimed squarely at those who had "other priorities" as they are wont to say.

Does this make Bob a two time loser? Hopefully we don't have to inact the three strikes rule.

It wasn't Bob who was the loser..

you people need a life seriously outside of ruston and what you think is politics is where you throw eggs. The Mayor did what he felt was right and now he is GONE. Move on to what the Town of Ruston is going to do NOW, not yesterday. Obviously some in the town think a part-time mayor whomever it may be has the time to have a life outside of ruston and manage ruston's issues. This town needs a FULL-TIME mayor who is going to get paid some money real enough to be able to deal with issues mainly whinning residents and lawsuits. Can someone say BANKRUPTCY? Time to call in Tacoma to take over unfortunately. How many lawsuits are there thus far and what kinds of money are they asking for? 1,000,000,000 for the former police chief that last I counted starting off, then $900,000 for the casino, any more?

Anonymous said...

You need a Mayor and council members willing to move this town in a positive direction.
Stalling and stonewalling can no longer be accepted behavior.Change will happen here in Ruston. You can bank on that.Either embrace it,or let Tacoma steam roll over you.It is the miss use of power that has caused you all the lawsiuts. Please, lets move on now,and allow this Town to thrive.

Anonymous said...

$8 million damages are asked for in one lawsuit, $11 million in another one, $3-4 million in another one, etc.

Yes, the B (BANKRUPTCY) word used side by side with Tacoma may be unfortunate, but some people are using the P (probable) because the town has been run by the A word (amateurs) for a couple of decades.

It isn't only lawsuits. Town employees are unionizing; this means more $$ from the town coffers to make their pay more equal to other cities.

Our infrastructure is in bad shape in places. More $$ will be spent to fix and replace problems.

The Marcotte report says that all service levels must stay unchanged or the costs will tip us over into a financial situation we can't survive.

We have $3.2 million in our coffers. That's it. We are in very deep financial doo-doo.

Developers know exactly what a ripe plum Ruston is. They will get what they want, including financial damages if they win any of their lawsuits, and we still won't be saved financially by the time we have to have the tax money from their projects.

Respectfully, Cassandra Troy

Dear cassandra.Thank you for the wonderful update. 23 million.I've heard a term called trebel(sic)damages. Will this apply to the lawsuits? You sure seem to have great sources.Perhaps "Mayor" is probable in your future.

Anonymous said...

I don't think so. No one ever listens to me.

Sincerely, Cassandra

Hope you're not too serious about being Cassandra....horrible fate and all that.

No, Craig, I've gotten over taking myself seriously. Life is a fete (not a fate); always remember that, Craig, and your life will never be horrible, either.

But there I go again..drat you, anyway, Apollo. May snakes lick your ears clean.
