Didn't Take Long

Thank you to the anonymous commenter on the last post. They uncovered Dan Alberston's campaign pledges, many of which he has already broken:

As a council member, I pledge to:

* actively listen to, and respect, the opinions of all residents,
* strive to preserve the small town, residential character of Ruston,
* ensure that residents are informed about issues before decisions are made,
* work to end the over-used practice of secret Executive Sessions which exclude residents from knowing what their elected officials are discussing,
* promote reasonable development that will complement, and not detract from, Ruston's small town, residential character,
* advocate fiscal responsibility (tax less and spend less),
* strive to keep Ruston independent,
* and always remember that I serve as your representative.

Let's see, after one meeting into the new year Dan has:

* already deceived us about a supposed contract with Tacoma Fire ~ maybe not an outright lie, but pretty darn close. Doesn't sound like he has kept his promise to "ensure that residents are informed about issues before decisions are made".

* negotiated a contract for a new town prosecutor behind the mayor's back. When he made the surprise presentation at the council meeting, it was clear Stebner and Everding knew this was coming. They made the motion to force the mayor to enter into a contract with a different person than Transue had recommended, with no questions asked. Maybe not an 'executive session', but lots of behind the scenes communication. Doesn't sound much like "work to end the over-used practice of secret Executive Sessions which exclude residents from knowing what their elected officials are discussing".

* promoted continued spending against the Commencement condo's legal use of their sales center (and supported turning down $24,000 in rent that was offered in 2007 before he was councilman). Nor did he object to Everding's talk of raising taxes to generate more revenue. Not sure that equates to "advocate fiscal responsibility (tax less and spend less)".

* After the fiasco of his move (along with Council Member Stebner) to destroy our fire department, its hard to imagine that he was even close to this promise to "actively listen to, and respect, the opinions of all residents", nor have his actions proven any commitment to "strive to keep Ruston independent".

Just some food for thought. What's your opinion?

Karen

Perhaps you can make a poster of his campaign promises and bring it to the meetings so that when we go to public comment we can show which promises he broke that time.

Its past three in the morning right now and im wondering what is going on in this town. Im seeing more and more that the people we have elected in this town to represent us are seeming to do the opposite. I wonder since their desire to destroy the volunteer fire department is fading whats next? After i re-read the last sentence i also wonder if any of us have thought about what exactly it means to be a volunteer. There have been many people fighting to save the fire department and Im not sure if at any point it has been thought about or maybe even mentioned that our firefighters are people that decided that instead of sleeping in on saturdays or missing monday night football, that there might be somethings that are far more important. Important enough that it isnt about the money or getting to wear a fancy helmet or waterproof boots, these people decided to donate 100's if not 1000's of hours for free, to protect citizens, many of which they dont even know. After getting attacked from every angle from people who are supposed to be looking out for our best interests and the best interests of the town itself, they then spent several hours and many town meetings later to try to save what they have been working for. I somehow doubt that it was about a group of people trying to preserve "Playing Fireman" on the weekends, but they believe in what they are doing and what they are trying to accomplish. Lets remember somethings are more important than money and small town politics. I dont know any of you and i dont think any of you know me but this has opened up discussion in ways i havent seen in the 4 years I've lived here. I cant wait until the next elections i have the feeling its going to get us all talking more than we ever have before. I think im going to go to bed so i can wake up get a hazelnut latte and watch the seahawks tomorrow. I will sleep well know knowing that some good happened in our small old mining town recently and i hope all of you do as well.

There can be no rest for us while renegade Ruston council members Wayne Stebner and Tacoma liar -- oops! I mean lawyer -- Dan Albertson have their hands on the reins of power. Albertson thinks our memories are so short as to forget his promises of just two months ago. His foolishness continues to amaze me. There is a Spanish proverb that seems to speak to our current situation with the destructive duo: "Men can acquire knowledge, but not wisdom. Some of the greatest fools ever known were learned men.”

I just figured it out ... renegade Ruston council member Tacoma attorney Dan Albertson wasn't elected. Therefore, he is not bound by his promises!
